Baia Mare is a municipality along the Sassar River in northwestern Romania. It is the capital of the Maramures Province. It is located about 600 km from the capital Bucharest, 70 km from the border with Hungary, and 50 km from the border with Ukraine. Baia Mare is one of the most important mining centers. In Romania, it has a history of more than 2,000 years of extracting gold, silver and other non-ferrous metals.
