The butchers' stronghold is part of the Baia Mare defense system, a system of walls and seven towers built at the initiative of Matthias Corvinus. The butchers' stronghold secured the southern gate of the city castle, one of the four gates to enter the city, and was called the bastion. Also the stronghold of ammunition, because it was a storage place for weapons and gunpowder in the past. The name "Butchers" comes from the fact that the Butchers' Guild used the stronghold to defend the castle against foreign attacks, as the Butchers' Guild was the largest and most powerful guild in Baia Marie.
