Located in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia, Córdoba was an important Roman city and a major Islamic center in the Middle Ages. This city is famous for its very important architectural and historical landmarks that attract millions annually. The Cordoba Mosque is a huge mosque that dates back to 784 AD, and includes a pillared prayer hall and Byzantine mosaic panels. Córdoba is also famous for its UNESCO-protected Old Town, Calahorra Tower, and the lively Piazza Cuerdera with its various restaurants and cafés, as well as the historical remains of Madinat al-Zahra. The city contains small streets, various alleys, and squares where many cultural events are held, most notably flamenco festivals and concerts.
