The name of the Marmara Region was derived from the Sea of Marmara, and it occupies the northwestern corner of the country. It represents 8.5% of the total area of Turkey with 67,000 square kilometers. It is considered a bridge linking the continents of Europe and Asia, and thus thousands of different tribes and civilizations have passed through it throughout history.
