Acre is considered one of the oldest historical cities in Palestine. It was founded in the third millennium BC by the Canaanites and they called it at that time the name "Akko", which means hot sand. It is also one of the most beautiful cities in the country due to its unique geographical location on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Acre consists of the old town and the new suburb. The city is predominantly archaeological, with many Bahai temples and old houses dominated by Crusader and Ottoman architecture. In 2001, the Old City of Acre was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Al-Jazzar Mosque is one of the most famous monuments in the city.
