The Museum of Modern and Contemporary History in Veliko Tarnovo is located next to the Prison Museum and houses many exhibited photographs showing Veliko Tarnovo and her role in the life of Bulgaria after liberation. Batenberg as Prince Alexander Batenberg in 1879, the Union in 1885, the Declaration of Independence on 22 September 1908, and other notable national events, the museum's focus is on Stefan Stambolov's role as a prominent statesman in modern Bulgaria.
