Rijeka is a Croatian port city on the Kvarner Gulf in the northern Adriatic Sea. Known as the main port of the state and the gateway to the islands of Croatia, as well as being the third largest city in the country. The city was previously the subject of a dispute between Italy and Hungary due to its strategic location and its deep-water port. In 2016, Rijeka was chosen as the European Capital of Culture for the year 2020. The city is distinguished by its attractive beaches, good weather and beautiful landscapes.
