Information about Villa Angiolina
This is the building that definitely marked the beginning of the tourist era in the history of Opatija near Rijeka. Awaiting its construction in 1844. (Actually a reconstruction of an old building owned by Baron Haller von Hallerkestein); Opatija was a relatively large settlement of about 120 houses, concentrated mainly around plots of land far from the cost of the sea and directed mainly towards sea fishing and sailing. With the arrival of Eugenio Scarpa, a laborer from Rijeka, and the construction of his summer house, Angelina (named after Scarpa's already deceased wife of the Sartori family), Opatija opened its doors to a whole host of guests, among whom it is worth noting the Austrian Empress Marie Anne, a scientist Botanist Heinrich Noe, botanist and noble Josep Gelach and others who spread fame around Opatija, with their enthusiasm for the flora and microclimate, set the stage for the future spa.
