Aachen is a spa town near Germany's borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. Aachen Cathedral was founded around AD 800 and a Gothic church was added later. The Domschatzkammer (Treasury) contains medieval artifacts including the mausoleum of Charlemagne, who was buried here in AD 814. The Baroque town hall, Achner Rathhaus, with its 19th-century frescoes, is located. Sulfur water fills the Elisenbrunnen fountains. The RWTH Aachen University, located in the city, is one of Germany's leading institutes of higher education in technology, and Aachen's industries include science, engineering and information technology. In 2009, Aachen ranked eighth among Germany's cities in terms of innovation and industry.
