One of the two surviving gates of the original Aachen city wall, the Pontor Gate in Aachen was built in the far west of the north-facing gates in the 14th century, and was guarded by soldiers and militias throughout the Free Imperial City. Today it is a symbol of Aachen's history when it was not It is still surrounded by the city wall, and the only way to enter was through these two gates, and the 14th century Nordtour West Gate survives to this day with its main castle. Strolling by this gate during the evening is a unique experience, as it is illuminated by special and cheerful lights.
