Matrouh Governorate is part of the Western Desert of Egypt, and includes the famous Siwa Oasis, known in ancient times as the Shrine of Amun. The region contains many historical sites related to World War II, including El Alamein, which includes the graves of fallen soldiers from the Axis and Allied forces.
