The Eastern Province is the largest region in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It extends from the shallow shores of the picturesque Arabian Gulf, through the palm-covered hills of the Al-Ahsa Oasis, all the way to the deep plains of the Empty Quarter. Historically, its location at the crossroads of the great civilizations of the Levant, Mesopotamia, and India made it a hub. Commercially prosperous, and while oil and gas activities make up a large part of the region's economic activity today, merchants used it for centuries as an inland route, bringing incense, perfumes and other goods from ancient Yemen to major empires. In this area, you can find some of the first human settlements in the Gulf region, one of the largest oases in the world, and the first city in the region included in the UNESCO list. Visitors will also love the natural springs gathered between more than 3 million palm trees, in addition to the maze of caves and bays woven through the cliffs. The cliffs, as well as a group of beautifully preserved archaeological sites that reflect the culture and traditions of the Kingdom.
