The Umayyad Palace complex is located in the northern part of the upper floor of the Citadel Mountain in Amman. It was built over the remains of a dilapidated Roman building and was used by the Umayyads for various purposes. The palace was built during the reign of the Umayyad Caliph Hisham, between 724 and 743 AD, and was used as an administrative center and the ruler's residence. The palace differs in planning and architecture from the rest of the desert palaces in Jordan, and this is what earned it great importance.
