Despite this gap, the Amman Citadel is among the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world, and most of the buildings still standing on the site date from the Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad periods, and its major buildings include the Temple of Hercules, the Byzantine Church, and the Umayyad Palace.
