The Devil's Tower is one of the 14 remaining of the 72 medieval towers of San Gimignano, and these towers were a symbol of wealth and power among the wealthy families of San Gimignano. The Devil's Tower is located in the far north of Piazza della Cisterna, and is part of the Palazzo dei Cortesi. Its construction dates back to the twelfth century AD, and the name of the tower is linked to a legend that says that the king, upon his return to the city, noticed that the tower differed in height as a result of a direct demonic intervention in it.
