The structure known as St. George's Church is located along the eastern edge of the Diyarbakir Citadel, abutting the retaining walls of the city and overlooking the Tigris Basin to the east. The date of foundation of the building is unknown, but some features such as the use of muqarnas indicate restorations after the Islamic conquest of the city. The building was also changed because the sultans of Artuq in Diyarbakir used the building as a palace, and the Ottomans repurposed it as a storehouse and prison.
