The Schack Gallery contains a collection of 19th-century Romantic German paintings from the private collection of Count Schack, a Prussian official, thinker, art collector, and literary lover who left his collection to the German Kaiser. Dedicated to promoting arts and poetry, Shack has traveled extensively and promoted unknown young artists. His idea of art was essentially idealistic and precluded realism.
