The Amadeo de Souza Cardoso Municipal Museum occupies the renovated space of a former monastery, which was founded by Albano Sardoeira in 1947 to house materials relating to the history of Amarante and in honor of the memory of the city's most famous artists and writers. It also has an interesting permanent collection of Portuguese modern and contemporary art, most notably the works of António Carneiro and Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, both of whom were born in the region.
