The towers on the three peaks of Mount Titano are a symbol of San Marino, but the third tower, known as the Montale Tower, is less known than the first and second towers, as it is the smallest and most recent of the three fortifications. Beginning as a watchtower during the wars against the Malatesta family that ruled the surrounding area, it was also used as a prison, and its only entrance was a few feet from the ground, making it impossible to enter from ground level, and thus visitors today cannot reach its interior, but the view that can be enjoyed from the top is well worth the trip to the base of the tower.
