The John Michael Palace was built between 1898 and 1907 according to the plans of the French architect Paul Gottereau. It was the residence of Constantin Mihail, a member of one of the richest families in Romania. The palace was decorated with marble staircases. silk walls, Murano-glass chandeliers, painted ceilings, gilded stucco, and Venetian mirrors, and today it hosts the Craiova Art Museum, which displays valuable pieces created by famous Romanian painters, including Theodor Aman and Nicolae Grigorescu. and Constantin Brancusi.
