The Great Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in Romania. It was founded in 1670 at the initiative of Rabbi Natha ben Moses Hannover, who was the rabbi of the Jewish community in Iasi in 1660, as he confirmed a charter granted to the Jewish community in Iasi in 1666 by Elias Alexandru (Ilias Alexandru) -Prince of Moldavia - The right of local Jews to open a school and set up a synagogue in their neighborhood. Since its founding in the second half of the 17th century, the Great Synagogue has undergone a number of major renovations. It was the only synagogue for the Jewish community in Iaşi, and today it is included in the National Register of Historic Monuments.
