The Modern Religious Art Collection was opened in 1973 by Pope Paul VI who intended to document and promote religious sentiments found in contemporary art. Formed largely through private donations or from the artists themselves, the collection is located on the first floor of the Papal Palace in approximately 55 rooms, including about 800 works created between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries.
