The Rais Palace is a historical building, located in the municipality of the Kasbah in the Capital Governorate, and it is one of the most famous landmarks in the city, as it was called Bastion 23, and it is considered the center of arts and culture. The Rais Palace was built in 1798, and was acquired by Mustafa Pasha Dey. Originally, it was built to enhance the city's defensive capabilities. But after 1830, it was used by the Chief of Civil Engineering, then it became a girls' boarding school, then the United States consulate, the residence of the Duke of Aumale, and finally a municipal library. This vast mansion is made up of three palaces, 17, 18 and 23, and is made up of six patrols, called fishermen's houses. In 1992, the Rais Palace was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, due to its architectural excellence, and the fact that it is the last remnant of the Lower Kasbah.
