Martyrs Square is one of the open areas that attract many locals and tourists alike, and it is the first starting point to start touring the Old City. This square has been important throughout the ages, as it was a weekly market for goats in the Ottoman era, and today it is a haven for all who wish to take a break and enjoy the outdoors and the sunshine. This square is also home to many birds that you can feed, especially in the evening hours. It was named in honor of the 4,000 Algerians who were martyred while defending the Ketchaoua mosque.
