Baalbek-Hermel Governorate is one of Lebanon's governorates and consists of the districts of Baalbek and Hermel. The governorate covers an area of 3,009 km² and is bordered by Akkar Governorate. The governorate, which is 86 kilometers from the capital, Beirut, includes 63 cities and towns distributed among two districts. The city of Baalbek, the capital of this governorate, includes a distinctive archaeological site that has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since 1984 AD. As for the Hermel District, located in the far north of the governorate, the lack of rainfall and low soil fertility make wheat and barley the main crops grown there, and raising livestock in this area is also common, such as sheep and goats. It must be noted that the presence of the Orontes River makes the area suitable for fish farming, especially trout and tilapia.
