"Zindan" is the Persian word for "dungeon", and this wonderful landmark is one of the historical prisons located in Bukhara. It is one of the important historical monuments in Uzbekistan, as the inscriptions in the prison rooms tell the stories of prisoners and their suffering in Uzbekistan in the period between the thirteenth and eighteenth centuries. The cells in this prison accommodate only 40 prisoners, but historians believe that the number of prisoners was greater, and this was to increase their suffering. Those who had debts and those who did not practice religious rites were arrested in this prison. There are also cells in this prison for the perpetrators of murders. These cells were low and contained poisonous scorpions and beetles, and they were cells in which they would be able to live for a period not exceeding three days.
