In the early 1980s, rock music was largely an underground movement in the Soviet Union, records were smuggled from gangs in the West into the country and there was strict control over who could perform. The most famous musician in the Soviet Union, who died tragically in 1990, prompted fans throughout major cities in the Soviet Union to erect memorial walls for this musician in his memory. It is still the focus of much attention to this day.
