On November 3, 1988, the Sri Lankan Tamil Tigers attacked Male and wanted to occupy the Maldives, but the local population valiantly resisted this invasion and won after a bloody battle. And in honor of those heroes who bravely stood before the enemy, this great monument was built, which has a symbolic meaning, as the circle means that the attackers surrounded the island of Male and the green color of the monument means the victory of the Maldives and the red color means the blood of this battle, as well as the sacrifice. Today, the monument is one of the distinctive features of the city.
