Established in 1973 by Paul VI, the Vatican Historical Museum, housed in a large room under the Square Garden, preserves the saddles, carriages, cars and sedans used by many popes, as well as 19th-century carriages and a model of the first Vatican City locomotive (1929). Of particular note is the Gran Gala Sedan designed for Pope Leo XII and used until Pius XI.
