Trapezitsa Castle is a medieval stronghold located on a hill of the same name in Veliko Tarnovo in northern Bulgaria. It is the second most important fortification in the ancient Bulgarian capital, Tarnovo, and includes many beautifully preserved buildings and churches, as well as the residence of the Patriarch. Behind the castle walls, during excavations at the beginning of the 20th century, archaeologists discovered the remains of at least 17 churches, each of which was beautifully decorated and played an important role in Bulgarian history.
