The Basilica of Saint Jacques was the first church built to keep pace with urbanization in Perpignan in the thirteenth century. It has typical Southern Gothic architecture, and has a single nave surrounded by side chapels. In 1699, the Church of La Sanche was built to the west of Saint Jacques for " Brethren of the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ.” During the Second Empire, the wall separating the two buildings was destroyed and fused together, and the bell tower was rebuilt around 1850.
