The Castle of Saint Ferdinand is an analogue of the castle of Santa Barbara in the city of Alicante. It was built in the neoclassical style on the hill of Tosal at the beginning of the 19th century as a defensive fortress against French advances. It was named in honor of Ferdinand VII, King of Spain, and played an important role in protecting the city of Alicante From any attack coming from the north, it is also believed to have served as a prison. Today, San Fernando Castle can be visited freely, although there is not much to see besides the outer walls.
