The medieval rocky monasteries of Osmar are religious, cultural and educational monuments of great importance in the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. They are located on the steep southern and southeastern slopes of the Osmar Boaz region of the Shumen Plateau, a complex of scattered rock-cut monasteries, churches and buildings The monasteries were occupied by monks during the twelfth to fourteenth centuries. These monasteries were built in the soft rocks of limestone, and it is believed that the monks reached them by ropes.
