Information about Omeriye Mosque
The Omariya Mosque is the oldest mosque in Gaziantep, and was restored in 1210 according to records, and although it is not known exactly who built the mosque, it is said to have been built during the reign of Caliph Omar Ibn Al-Khattab or built by the Umayyad Caliph Omar Ibn Abdul Aziz, grandson of the daughter of Omar, and there are also rumors that Omar built it and Omar bin Abdul Aziz repaired it. The mosque's gate and altar are built of white and black stones, beautiful examples of carved stonework can be seen on the balustrades of the minaret's balconies, and it is even possible to see traces of bullets and pieces of shrapnel that occurred during the defense of the city in the body of the minaret.
