The Convent of Santa Clara a Nova was built in 1649 on the left bank of the Mondego River in Coimbra, according to plans drawn up by the chief royal engineer and professor at the University of Coimbra, João Toriano, with the aim of providing shelter for the Clarissa Nuns.
