Information about Jaromarsburg
Jaromarsburg is a former cult site of the Rani Slavic tribe, in use from the ninth to the twelfth centuries, and was located in the northeastern part of the island of Rügen on the Baltic Sea at Cape Arkona. The name of this temple hill is derived from the Rani prince Jaromar I ( Jaromar I) who became a vassal of Danish King Valdemar I in 1168 after Denmark invaded Rügen. At Cape Arkona in recent centuries, parts of the cliff tops have continuously collapsed into the sea, which is why today the remains of Jaromarsburg consist mainly of the castle walls, and due to the loss of 10-20 meters of them, the current area within the walls is believed to represent only a third of the total As a result, several years ago urgent archaeological excavations were carried out, which revealed the site of the Svetovid temple, which had long been believed to have been lost from the coastal avalanche.
