Listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988, the ancient city of Hierapolis is one of the most famous ancient cities in the Aegean region. It is believed to have been founded by Eumenes II, king of Pergamum in the second century BC, and was named after Hiera, wife of the legendary founder Telephus. Pergamum, remains of baths, temples and many Greek monuments can be seen at the site, along with a huge Roman amphitheater.
