It is not known exactly when the fortress of Santo Antonio de Peleche was built, but it is estimated that it was in operation in the 16th century. It is a multi-faceted building with a defensive tower in the corner, and also contains a number of structures inside; One of the most notable is the cube-shaped chapel dedicated to St. Catherine. The fort was badly damaged by the attack of pirate Francis Drake in 1587 and an earthquake in 1755. It was discontinued in the nineteenth century, and then restored for tourism purposes in the twentieth century.
