Itar Open Air Ethnographic Museum is the first museum of its kind in Bulgaria. It was established in 1964. It is located 8 km south of Gabrovo. It houses a unique collection of ancient water-based instruments in Bulgaria, the most important of which is the water wheel. The 10 collections are among the richest and well-preserved collections of art among all the European open-air museums, and the most important characteristic of this collection is that all the machines work as they did in the past. In addition, the museum's artisanal commercial street presents 16 different styles of Balkan architecture, displaying the original talents of the builders at the time.
