Dongnyemun Gate, also known as Independence Gate, is a monument built to honor the Korean people and their struggle for national independence from foreign interference. It is located in the southeast corner of Independence Park near the History Hall of Seodaemun Prison. It was here that Chinese and foreign envoys were received and honored. by the Joseon kings upon their arrival in Korea. The construction of the gate was designed by the architect Sim Uiseok with the king's approval, modeled on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the capital of France.
