The Royal Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple, is the largest temple complex in Sri Lanka, dating back to the 1st century BC when King Valagamba sought refuge in a gigantic outcrop in central Sri Lanka and ordered a group of temples to be carved into the caves at a height About 150 meters above the surrounding plains, today, the caves are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and many interesting Buddhist statues can be seen, including statues of reclining Buddhas and arches decorated with dragons.
