Persik Dam, one of the 21 dams of the Southeast Anatolia Project, is located in Turkey on the Euphrates, 60 km south of Ataturk Dam, 8 km north of the town of Persik and 80 km west of Şanlıurfa province. Its purpose was for irrigation and energy production. The dam includes a hydroelectric power station, which was established in 2001. The structure of the dam consists of a concrete base and a sand cover with a clay layer 62.5 meters high. The dam was built on the ruins of the ancient city of Zeugma, and therefore provides some archaeological views in addition to its picturesque nature.
