After the original conceptual design in the form of a beehive was introduced by Scottish architect Sir Basil Spence in 1964, it was built in phases between 1969 and 1979. Bees are the common name for the executive wing of the New Zealand Parliament Buildings. The building is ten floors (72 m) high and has four floors below ground level. The heart of the entrance is decorated with marble floors, stainless steel lattice wall panels, and a transparent glass ceiling.
