Opatija is one of the oldest Croatian tourist destinations, dating back to the nineteenth century when it was a popular spot for the Austro-Hungarian king and other nobles. Many splendid hotels and villas were built there during the period of Austro-Hungarian tourism expansion, from the mid-nineteenth century until the war First world, Opatija has maintained its prominence even today, and is often referred to as “Croatian Cannes.” In recent history, Opatija has remained in the hands of wealthy Austro-Hungarian families whose stunning mansions line the city’s coast and provide fine examples of architecture from that time. The city is also filled with beautiful parks, museums and luxury hotels, all as a result of the "high society" that has occupied this city for more than a hundred years. It is worth noting that this city is built on a hill that extends directly from the coast, providing stunning views that are worth seeing.
