Nuremberg is the second largest city in the German state of Bavaria after its capital Munich, with a population of 511,628. Nuremberg forms a continuous intersection with the neighboring cities of Fürth, Erlangen and Schwabach and has a total population of 787,976 while the greater Nuremberg region has a population of about 3.5 million. The city is located about 170 kilometers (110 mi) north of Munich. It is the largest city in the East Franconian dialect region. There are several higher education institutions in the city, most notably the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nuremberg), with 39,780 students (2017) the third largest university in Bavaria and eleventh largest in Germany with campuses in Erlangen and Nuremberg and a university hospital in Erlangen . Nuremberg Airport (Flughafen-Nuremberg) is the second busiest airport in Bavaria after Munich Airport, and the tenth busiest airport in Germany.
