France's northernmost region, Hauts-de-France, is famous for being the scene of one of the most brutal battles of World War I - the Battle of the Somme, and today it is filled with war cemeteries, memorials and sprawling battlefields. Aside from its turbulent and tumultuous past, the region includes some beautiful towns and cities, such as Amiens and Montreuil, and since many parts of it were highly industrial, you will also see this side of its past in cities such as Lille and Calais, and from time to time, you will pass through abandoned mines and the rubble left from Mining operations. In addition, the area is home to some beautiful rural villages, excellent beaches and many interesting historical landmarks and towns.
