Assiut Governorate is considered one of the largest governorates of Upper Egypt, and the most important in its location, as it is located in the middle of the governorates of Upper Egypt, and its capital is the city of Assiut, whose name was derived from the Pharaonic word “Siut,” meaning the guard. The governorate is characterized by a distinctive continental climate due to its location between two mountainous heights. It was considered the commercial capital of Upper Egypt, and is famous for its ancient neighborhoods and shrines. Today, the governorate is considered one of the oldest governorates in Egypt. It gained its importance in ancient Egypt because of its central location among the Pharaonic regions of Egypt, and because it was a major center for commercial caravans heading to the oases in the Western Desert and the beginning of the Arbaeen Trail that reaches Sudan. Assiut includes cultural heritage from various eras, whether the Pharaonic, Roman, Coptic or Islamic eras, and is considered one of the tourist attractions due to the availability of tourism components.
