Akkar is one of the seven governorates of Lebanon, and its capital is the city of Halba. Akkar extends from the course of the Nahr al-Bared, to the course of the Great River along the border with Syria in the north, with an area of more than 776 square kilometers. It is about 110 km away from the Lebanese capital, Beirut. The Akkar region, in its entire geographical area, contains a rich heritage of civilizations and peoples that crossed or settled there more than 6,000 years ago, immortalizing their presence in dozens of archaeological and heritage sites, a significant portion of which are still clearly visible, including forts, castles, paintings, and inscriptions engraved on rock, and ancient temples, churches, mosques, and hospices. Palaces, houses, wine presses, mills, and household tools, as well as many inns, roads, arched stone bridges, caves, grottoes, and cemeteries, each of which has stories and narratives in the history of this region. From the ancient Stone Ages to modern times and the successive eras between them, each of them had a location and impact in Akkar Governorate. Akkar is characterized by a rich and diverse nature, as it consists of 3 main geographical regions: the plain, medium-altitude plateaus, and mountains.
