Information about Zedekiah's Cave
Under the houses of the Old City of Jerusalem, there is a vast hidden cave. According to Jewish history, it is the cave from which the Jewish King Siddiqiahu fled from the Chaldeans. Inside the cave there is a wonderful water spring that was named the Fountain of Siddiqiahu’s Tears. In the late nineteenth century, archaeologists found in the cave a statue of a mythical winged character that resembles the Sphinx in its details. From this cave, the stone known as Malka was extracted, which is a very high quality building stone and from which the most luxurious buildings in Jerusalem were built. A lot of mystery surrounds the history of this cave, which covers an area of 9,000 square metres, its discovered length is close to 250 meters, and its highest height is 50 meters. It is believed that Mujir al-Din al-Hanbali, the judge of Jerusalem in the Mamluk era, who wrote a book in which he chronicled the cities of Jerusalem and Hebron, about five centuries ago, intended this cave when he mentioned in his book “The Cave of Linen.”
