One of the most prominent museums in Münster, the National Westphalian Museum of Art and Cultural History traces its roots back to the early 19th century, uniting 1,000 years of art, from the early Middle Ages to the present, and in total, the museum's permanent collection includes more than 350,000 paintings. Sculptures, photographs, drawings, prints, coins and collectibles, in addition to 135,000 books, among the most important works of art in the museum are those of Heinrich Brabender, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Franz Marc and Ernst Ludwig Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, August Macke, Otto Piene, Gerhard Richter, Rosemarie Trockel, and others.
